Bully sticks are becoming increasingly popular among dog owners, especially as a safer alternative to rawhide. Although some owners are put off by bully sticks because of what they are: bovine penis (or pizzle, as manufacturers like to call it). It may sound disgusting, but remember that dogs are adapted to eat all parts of animals, just like wolves do in the wild.
When we use animals for their meat, only certain parts are used for human consumption. Instead of the rest of the animal going to waste, the less desirable parts are often used in pet food. In this case, beef tendon is often used. There are several reasons why your dog should try them, including these:
#1 – They are delicious
Most dogs love bully sticks. They seem to be attracted to the smell of the treats and enjoy the taste. Depending on the type and size of the bully stick and the size and chewing style of your pup, they can provide up to several hours of entertainment. They are considered long-lasting chews that mentally stimulate dogs and are often used by owners during busy times or when the dogs need to be crated.
#2 – They promote dental health
Bully sticks are an excellent choice when it comes to promoting dental health in our dogs. Although they do not replace brushing your teeth and having your teeth professionally cleaned by a veterinarian, they do offer a number of important benefits. The chewing and gnawing your dog does to work through the bully stick scrapes nasty plaque and tartar from your dog’s teeth. Bully sticks are an easy way to provide at-home dental cleaning for the dog who hates brushing or wiping his teeth.
#3 – They are nutritious
Bully sticks are a very nutritious treat. Unlike rawhides, they are 100% digestible. This means that your dog can fully digest the entire bully stick without the risk of undigested pieces creating a blockage in your dog’s intestinal tract. Bully sticks are also all-natural, one-ingredient treats, meaning there are no dangerous additives to worry about. They are also high in protein and low in fat, making them an excellent choice for dogs needing to lose weight. Beef is also an excellent source of amino acids, magnesium and calcium to promote the health of your dog’s skin, coat, muscles and brain; meaning that bully sticks also provide these nutrients.
